Rabia Z's World of Fashion, where Modesty is always in Style!

A Business Graduate from University of Phoenix & Nassau Community College NYC, Rabia studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and Esmod. Living in USA during the tragic 9/11 events made Rabia realize the challenges faced by moderate Muslimas in their current global situation. Commencing her career in a moderate manner, Rabia Z. had a clear mandate- to design attire for women that were modest but modern - this was a service which she commenced through her online site in 2007.

From her first collection, Rabia Z. evolved as a brand that echoed elegance, reflecting the designer’s quest for perfection. With impeccable finish and finesse of form, it was developed in keeping with global trends but with using her rich tapestry of tradition - both Afghani and Arab. Her designs became synonymous with subtle stylishness catering to the niche needs of the global citizen who seeks to be in touch with the latest international style but within the tenets of Faith.

Hailing in the era of ‘conservative chic’, Rabia returned to her roots in UAE. Here she blazed a trail, winning ‘The Emerging Designer Award’ for her debut collection in October 2007 at Dubai Fashion Week, and British Council's 'International Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year 2008' award. Her vision was incorporated in every signature piece which invited her sisters worldwide to take this first step into modesty.

Master classes with Sir Paul Smith and retail management training at TOPSHOP and SELFRIDGES gave further grounding to her fashion ideology. This set her up to handle technical and marketing challenges in a professional manner. Her new silhouettes were fashionable yet functional, infusing colour whilst styling her veils. Empowering women, taking back the choice, Rabia developed veiled solutions for women facing challenges in shared spaces internationally.

Scintillating collections gracefully adorned the ramps at the Abu Dhabi Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, Creations Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Fiesta and Fashion Expo Arabia. Opening Arabian Fashion World London, Rabia was the first Arab designer to show moderate yet modern ensembles at Miami Fashion Week 2010, unveiling a capsule creation for ‘Women’s Empowerment’ at Fashion Pakistan Week, celebrating African American Muslim women, at Muhammad Ali Centre. Rabia’s collection has also been acquired by Sharjah Museum of Islamic Arts & Culture.

Inspired by Mercedes Benz SLS-AMG Rabia launched her GCC Collection of Abayas and Red Carpet Couture in 2010; construction, cut, drapery, creativity and contemporary chic were the cornerstone of this demi-couture and couture range. ‘RUBY’ her high street label was launched at a special ‘design’ event with SPLASH; “Ruby 4 Aspire” is her high performance sportswear range that celebrates Arab Sports, Women and Sheyla Salon is her customized veiling solutions for the global Muslima.

Frequently covered by prestigious international publications, TV channels -BBC World News, CBS News, Pay-Per-View TV USA, Travel Channel, Time magazine, International Herald Tribune, Financial Times, New York Times, CNN, Elle, Marie Claire, OK Magazine, Grazia, Harpers Bazaar, Muslim Journal, Aziza Muslim Women’s Magazine, Vogue Arabia, and international books Islam and Muslims- a Tapestry of Faith (Canada); UAE Encyclopedia; Power Dressing, Islamic Fashion (Amsterdam). She played a lead protagonist in two Award winning documentary ‘DoBuy-The Fabric of Faith’ & ‘The Veiled Threat’ when she reveals a hereto unheard voice on veiling and social entrepreneurship .

Referred to as one of the 100 Most Powerful Arab Personalities in Arabian Business News 2009, she has been nominated as the first Afghani Asian ‘Super Achievers’ –in an ode to her motherland. Her inspirational speech at 5th World Islamic Economic Forum's Young Leaders Forum on ‘Creating Innovative Market’ won her a standing applause. Speaking at Arab Women Leadership Panel of Columbia University’s Barnard College 2010 and ASPIRE Woman 4 Sports Conference Qatar November she found a new direction.

Training for inspirational speaking, focusing especially on strengthening her personal and business skills, she hopes to emerge and lead, to teach designers and young women entrepreneurs how to confidently pursue their dreams, careers and goals. Commencing by speaking at the visionary panel of 85 Broads, Dubai Forum, London College of Fashion’s UAE Courses; Rabia will continue providing motivation to design students at local universities.
